The GranDuro 2Shawn Naftzinger and Steve Todorow Share NEETS Spotlight at Grandview!Story by:Geno Ostrowski TJMM Despite a downpour toward the end of the 150-lap 6/8 Cyl. NEETS enduro at Grandview Speedway on Sunday, Shawn Naftzinger held off the competition to score his first NEETS victory. For the second time this season, Steve Todorow went on to take the checkered flag in the 4 Cyl. event. The events marked the fourth time this season that the enduro series has visited the 1/3-mile dirt facility. Being the mid season event for "NEETS on Dirt" 1.5x the regular amount of points were on the line, which made the racing event more spectacular for the great crowd at the speedway. The first enduro kicked off with 44 6/8-cylinder vehicles lined up to take the green flag and first time enduro driver Al Spotts sat on the pole and held the top spot until lap two when he was overtaken by Mike Alessi. Two laps buzzed off and Frank Petroski made the pass for the race lead. Petroski kept a short lead until a hard charging Shawn Naftzinger blew by him for the top spot. The first red flag was displayed on lap 34 when Alessi blew a radiator hose and had to evacuate his car. A dramatic roll over ended John Sacks' day as his #412 ended up sliding between turns 3 and 4 on it's lid on lap 99. Sacks climbed from his machine under his own power much to the relief of everyone. At the time, Naftzinger had lapped the entire field and was on a lap of his own with Duane Eidem running in second. A heavy downpour on lap 114 brought out a red once again and things changed dramatically. The racers were brought to the infield to wait for the storm to pass, then were brought back out to find a very different racetrack upon their return. The slippery, muddy track made it a very difficult go of it as cars were slipping and sliding all over the track. Leader Naftzinger spun and slid into victory lane early as his mount could not get a good grip. As two other cars piled in front of Naftzinger and Eidem made his way past Naftzinger, which put him back on the same lap. Naftzinger finally broke his way out and got back on track, but Eidem had gotten so far ahead that he passed Naftzinger by lap 125 and took the lead. However, it was to be short-lived as Eidem got into a tangle in turn three, which put him in the muddiest part of the track. Eidem struggled to get free of the swampy conditions and Naftzinger managed to squeak by. He never looked back and went on to win his first NEETS event of the season over Chris Reichert, Duane Eidem, Tim Pauch and Richie Smith. Thirty-four 4 cylinders eagerly took to the track and Steve Todorow the way from the pole position in the 150-lap event. Todorow led for two circuits before he was overtaken by Mark Forman for the race lead. Running with a full head of steam was Phil Levering, who snatched the lead away the fourth lap. However, Levering ended up getting tangled up in lapped traffic and Joel Matter quickly took command. By lap 20, Todorow charged ahead and grabbed the top spot once again. Two red flags were thrown early on for cars blocking the pit gate and in the meantime, Todorow nearly lapped the entire field, as second place runner, Dave Bentley, Jr., was the only driver on the lead lap. That changed when Bentley went into a lap 95 spin cycle and was forced pit side with a flat tire, which moved Levering into second. The red flag flew once again when George Fulmor spun and had his driver's door facing traffic. Shortly after green flag racing resumed, Levering surrendered second and had to pit with a flat tire. With no pressure on Todorow, he easily cruised to victory for the second time this season over Jeff Walls, Mike Ventura, Dave Bentley, Jr. and Phil Levering.
